L'aventure commence pour de bon avec Franz Anton Mesmer à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. L'homme était assez fantasque, peu scrupuleux, odieux à son entourage. Et l'on a peine à imaginer aujourd'hui qu'un tel personnage ait pu convaincre tant de malades de la haute société de le rémunérer aussi largement pour être rassemblés autour d'un baquet rempli d'eau magnétisée, lui qui s'était aliéné la médecine officielle.
Le secret de sa réussite ? Il guérissait. Certes, pas tous ses patients, mais bon nombre d'entre eux au meilleur de sa carrière. Et si le baquet n'y était pas pour grand-chose — pas plus d'ailleurs que l'orme magnétisé autour duquel le marquis de Puységur, son disciple, soignera plus tard les paysans de Buzancy —, il contribua bel et bien à mettre en évidence que l'activité psychique échappe partiellement à la conscience et détermine le comportement des hommes à leur insu.
Il faudra attendre un bon siècle d'expérimentation et de travaux théoriques contradictoires, bien éloignés de l'aristocratique baquet, pour que se mette en place le dispositif thérapeutique et théorique moderne, marqué par les figures de Sigmund Freud, Pierre Janet, Alfred Adler et Cari Gustav Jung. Mais il ne fait pas de doute que la psychanalyse, l'analyse psychologique, la psychologie individuelle et la psychologie analytique procèdent de la même histoire, et que celle-ci plonge ses racines au siècle des Lumières.
C'est précisément cette histoire que raconte dans cet ouvrage pionnier, et aujourd'hui classique, Henri F. Ellenberger, médecin psychiatre et historien des sciences.
